ROMs

Custom ROMs open a new horizon to the world of Android. To understand how they work, you need to understand a few terms like AOSP, stock, port and kang.
AOSP is the Android Open Source Project whereby Google releases a new OS for its devices and allows phone companies and developers to mod it according to their liking. Phone companies then release the software updates for their phones but we aren't concerned with that.
Developers, on the other hand, take these "stock" ROMs and mod them, both Nexus ROMs and of other devices. They mod them in such a way that their releases are "ported" to work on other devices. For example, the developers at cyanogenmod port the stock ROM of Galaxy Nexus to Galaxy S3, S2 and other similar devices. Such ROMs which are made from modding stock ROMs are known as AOSP ROMs.
Then comes the world of kang ROMs. Kang developers cherry-pick the best mods from AOSP and stock ROMs and release their own ROMs. The most well-known kang developers are the AOKP or Android Open Kang Project (how convenient!).

We constantly try and experiment new ROMs.

Here are a few of our favorites:

1. Cyanogenmod:
A discussion of custom ROMs cannot occur without mentioning the pioneers at cyanogenmod. They have been making AOSP ROMs regularly for innumeral devices for a long time. If you are just starting to flash new ROMs, this is the one to start with. CM ROMs are named CM7, CM9 and CM10. The number denotes the first letter of the Android OS name i.e. CM7 is Gingerbread, CM9 is Ice-cream sandwich and CM10 is Jellybean. They also release nightly ROMs for most phones but they aren't always stable.

2. MIUI:
MIUI is a Chinese-based ROM. It is originally released by the Chinese mobile company Xiaomi. These ROMs are then ported to other Android devices. One may say they are a copy of iOS but we couldn't care less. These ROMs are sleek, user-friendly and very beautiful. If you are looking for a smooth transition from Apple to Android, this is the ROM for you. MIUI.us release weekly ROMs for most devices.

3. AOKP:
AOKP is my personal favorite. It is a kang of cyanogenmod with very useful mods and features. The best part is that they follow up with stable releases every now and then with newer features. Whenever you think "It would have been nice if my phone could do this", they most probably will release that feature in the next update. You have to try it to know how awesome it is!

4. Paranoid Android:
Paranoid Android is a group of developers who developed the revolutionary ROM, Paranoid Android, which enables the dual features of both Phone and Tablet mode on your phone. It's quite interesting, actually.
